Sealants
Sealants, also known as fissure sealants, are a protective coating
that is applied to the chewing surface and sides of teeth to reduce
the risk of decay. Sealants are applied to children from the age
of 6 to 15 and also can be applied to adults who are at high risk
of tooth decay.
| The
Problem : |
|
 |
- High risk of tooth decay in adults due to different reasons
- Prevent decay in permanent teeth of children
- Halt the development of existing decay
| The
Solution : |
|
 |
The dental hygienist will professionally apply the sealant material
on the chewing surfaces of teeth to prevent cavities. Sealants prevent
tooth decay from emerging; they also can halt existing decay in
its earliest stage.
A combination of sealants and fluoride
may virtually eliminate decay in the permanent teeth of many children.
| The
Procedure : |
|
 |
The hygienist will clean and dry the tooth. Then, a thin layer
of liquid plastic is applied into the groove or pit of the tooth.
The liquid then hardens into a tough layer that will prevent decay
occurring.
| Advantages: |
|
 |
Sealants are highly effective in the prevention of tooth decay
on the chewing surfaces of teeth. They are painless; they do not
require injection or drilling. Sealants save time and money by eliminating
the need for future fillings and other dental procedures. They are
typically not visible.
| Disadvantages: |
|
 |
Sealants can help to prevent decay on the chewing surface of a
tooth provided that proper oral hygiene is maintained which consists
of Home Care Prevention
as well as Professional Prevention
procedures. Sealants do not prevent decay between teeth or the onset
of gum disease.
| Alternatives: |
|
 |
There is no alternative to sealants; sealants are a popular and
painless alternative to more involved procedures. Fillings
might be an alternative depending on the status of the tooth decay.
|
Remember To : |
|
 |
- Check sealants regularly
- Eat and drink sensibly (eg. less sugar and fizzy drinks intake)
- Brush teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day (preferably
after each meal)
- Have regular dental examinations and cleaning
Don't forget: the above applies to both adults and children!
